The 菠菜网lol正规平台 Department of Biological 科学s is the host to the 菠菜网lol正规平台马克 U*STAR Program. The Director of the Program is Dr. Cleber Ouverney.

MARC U*STAR 项目  are sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical 科学s (NIGMS), a branch of the National Institute of Health (NIH)  to provide support for undergraduate students who are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Psychology 和 Biomedical 工程) to improve their preparation for high-caliber graduate training at the Ph.D. 水平. Institutions with significant enrollments of college students from underrepresented groups may be eligible to apply.

• Who is eligible for 菠菜网lol正规平台马克?

  • All applicants must be US Citizens or legal residents.  Applicants must also be registered, full-time undergraduate students at 菠菜网lol正规平台 majoring in 科学s, Psychology or 工程 with an interest in the biomedical fields. Community college transfers to 菠菜网lol正规平台 can apply prior to starting at 菠菜网lol正规平台.

    Students who apply to be selected as MARC Trainees must be honors students (3.0的绩点 or better) who have expressed interest in pursuing postgraduate education leading Ph值.D.，或M.D.-Ph.D. (but NOT only an M.D.).

    Under NIGMS guidelines, priority is given to applicants of the following ethnicities who are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences:

    - African American
    - Latina/Latino
    - Native American 
    - Native Pacific Isl和er

    The period of appointment to the MARC U-STAR program is a consecutive 24-month period at the final 2 years of undergraduate training, the junior 和 senior years.

• What benefits would the MARC program have for me?

  • MARC students 和 their faculty 研究 mentors receive:

    1. $850 in 研究 funds per year  for 2 years
    2. Funding for student conference 和 研究 travel each of 2 years

     

    MARC students receive:

    1. ~ $1000.00 a month for 24 months.
    2. 60% of their tuition costs for 2 academic years
    3. Priority registration for 2 years
    4. Presentation, graduation school application 和 graduate survival skills training.
• If I am selected to be a 菠菜网lol正规平台马克 trainee, what are my obligations?

  • If you are invited to join MARC or RISE, you will need to:

    - Choose a 菠菜网lol正规平台 faculty 研究 mentor 和 have that person agree to mentor your 研究.

    - Keep your grade point at or above a 3.0或更高. 

    - Perform 和 hopefully publish meaningful 研究. Students will spend two full academic years 和 一个 full summer in their faculty mentor's 研究 lab. 

    - Present your 研究 at a 研究 conference. We require the students to present a poster or oral presentation at 一个 or more professional conferences during the second year of their program.

    - The whole MARC cohort will travel together to 一个, national conference for minority students per year (such as ABRCMS or SACNAS).

    - MARC Fellows *must* go away to a PhD institution for the second summer of their program- they cannot stay in their mentor's lab for both summers.

    - MARC students must attend the weekly MARC seminar.   Students must register for Biol 180 to receive credit for this course. In this course, the students practice the skills needed to be a successful 研究er, PhD c和idate, PhD student, 和 PhD. 

    - Take a course in science ethics (such as Philosophy 133).

• What if I don't have a 3.0的绩点 or otherwise don't qualify for MARC?

  • You could consider the 菠菜网lol正规平台 RISE (研究 Initiative for Scientific Enhancement Program).

    The RISE Program aims to help reduce the existing gap in completion of Ph.D. 度 between underrepresented 和 non-underrepresented students. The RISE Program Director 是博士. Karen Singmaster in the Chemistry Department (ksingmaster@jupiter.yihetianquan.com).

    All applicants must be US Citizens or legal residents.  Applicants must also be registered, full-time undergraduate students at 菠菜网lol正规平台 majoring in 科学s or 工程 with an interest in the biomedical fields. 

    Community college transfers to 菠菜网lol正规平台 can apply prior to starting at 菠菜网lol正规平台 RISE applicants must have at least a 2.7 GPA 和 have completed Calculus I (Math 30P/30 at 菠菜网lol正规平台 or 当量). 

    Like MARC, Undergraduate 研究 is the principal comp一个nt of the RISE program 和 as such a willingness 和 commitment to participate in 研究 is required. 

    RISE students are also expected to attend a weekly program meeting every semester 和 participate in Academic Excellence Workshops 和 Summer Workshops/Preparation Courses if these are still relevant to their current course work.
